Sauna Weight Loss
Saunas have several benefits and not surprisingly, one of which is weight loss. This is one of the most natural ways to lose weight combined with a good diet and exercise. Saunas promote an increase in several different natural responses to the body that allow for it to purge itself in a healthy way, so over time, with regular sauna use, a healthy weight is not only achieved, but maintained.
Sweating is by far the most prominent and best known weight loss component of utilizing a sauna. Aside from just decreasing fluid retention, it decreases salt retention. Too much salt is one of the primary reasons people suffer from fluid retention. While the best way to decrease salt is to decrease it in your diet, the sauna does remove some salt as a person sweats during their sauna treatment.
Sweating allows for detoxification of the body. There are many chemicals that individuals put in their bodies each and every day whether they realize it or not. These can be from foods, hair care products such as shampoos, and pollution in its various forms. Saunas utilize moist heat to treat the body in a therapeutic way and remove these chemicals and pollutants so the body can work more effectively as a whole. Sweating is the function in which this is accomplished.
Saunas are the perfect stress relief as well. They promote muscle relaxation, which in turn decreases pain and/or muscle soreness following a proper exercise program. The sauna allows the muscle tissues to loosen and this aids in quicker recovery time between workouts. The benefit to weight loss is that if your body is not tense from stress, you can lose weight easier and keep it off. There are chemicals that are produced in the body during stress called cortisol. Cortisol is good for healthy stress. It provides a vital function of protection in the body. However, bad stress leads to a buildup of cortisol and this increases weight. Saunas have the ability to wash away the bad stress and in turn cortisol decreases to normal levels and weight loss can be achieved. Other health issues that saunas help by decreasing stress include the possibility of developing serious problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and the like.
Weight Loss Protocol
Just as with any other weight loss plan, when utilizing a sauna there are several factors to remember. Initially, begin with small amounts and work your way up. Less is best in this situation. Start with 15-20 minutes for 2 times a week and work gradually towards 30 minute sessions twice daily. A reasonable goal to expect is 3-5 lbs. per week. Proper weight loss takes time. Saunas are a wonderful way to achieve weight loss goals in a healthy manner.
Remember, every body is different and men typically lose weight quicker than women. People with risk factors such as cardiac, diabetes, pregnancy, or any other issues that could be compromised by excessive heat should decrease their time in the sauna or avoid it completely until cleared by his or her physician. People over the age of 65 should adhere to this general rule as well.
